Herm Weber is an architect, one of the founders of Weber Murphy Fox, and designer of many Erie landmarks, including Dobbins Landing Tower, the Blasco Library, the Niagara Museum, Penn State Behrend’s REDC, and Metzgar Alumni Center, Mercyhurst’s Student Union, the Regional Cancer Center, and many others. His designs have won numerous local and regional design awards. He has taught architectural design at the University of Kentucky, Penn State University, and Chiang Mai University in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and serves as juror and advisor at Mercyhurst’s Dept. of Interior Design and Pre-Architecture His recent paintings are the result of an interest in photography, and an opportunity for extensive travel. “Richly imagematic” exotic areas, throughout Asia, India, Greece, Turkey Italy Sicily, and central and eastern Europe, as well as local scenes have provided inspiration for his paintings. His process starts with carefully composed digital photos, which are then “pushed and pulled” in Photoshop, and often included as collage elements in the finished acrylic paintings. Fascination with light and luminosity created by the layering of glazes animate the works. Though the paintings are not architectural in the narrow sense, emphasis on composition, the use of light, layering, and repetition of elements and forms are reflections of his architectural background. He thinks of this series of paintings as “postcards”, which combine his passions for travel, photography, and visual design.
